^w^ The most dangerous sharks in South African coastal waters are the Great White Shark and the Zambezi (or Bull) Shark.

^w^ Beaches were emptied along the South Natal Coast in December of1957, still referred to as "Black December", following a series of shark attacks.

^w^ Offshore netting of the most popular beaches was begun in the early 1960s, and this practice has been successful in lowering the incidence of shark attacks in South African 
waters.

^w^ Many animals die after being caught in the nets.  Work is underway to develop an electronic barrier that will repulse sharks without affecting humans.
